North Greenville Indoor is a non-profit youth percussion ensemble that is based out of and sponsored by North Greenville University in Greenville, South Carolina. The ensemble exists to educate young musicians by striving toward excellence in the marching arts. We are made up of approximately 35-40 musicians, ages 14 to 22 (22 being the age out), and compete in the Percussion Independent A class of Winter Guard International.
The 2016-17 Indoor Season marked NGI’s inaugural season. NGI competed as a member of the Carolina Winter Ensemble Association (CWEA) and Winter Guard International (WGI) in the Percussion Independent A Class. In our first year, NGI won the Independent A Class at the CWEA Championships and made it to semi-finals at the WGI World Championships, where we finished 19th out of 29 participating drumlines.
Director - Travis Waters
Travis Waters is in his 2nd year as Director of NGI. He is in his 7th year as the Band Director at Greenville Senior High School in Greenville, South Carolina, and has served as a band director for 11 years. Under the direction of Mr. Waters, his bands have medaled at state 3 times, been a state finalist 5 times, with 1 State Championship. His indoor groups have won 3 gold medals and 3 silver medals in Scholastic A/Open and Independent A/Open. His groups have also been finalists for WGI Regionals and Super Regionals for 6 years. He lives in Greer, SC with his gorgeous wife Katie and sons Brent and Gavin. He graduated North Greenville University in 2007 with a BA in Music Education.
Assistant Director of Operations - Garrett Ciriello
Garrett attended Limestone College from 2010 to 2015. While pursuing a degree in Percussion Performance with a concentration in Jazz, Garrett had the opportunity to perform with many ensembles inside and out of the college. Garrett was a charter member of Saints Percussion, a WGI PIO Indoor Percussion Ensemble. Garrett has worked with the DCI World Champion Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps in several facets from the 2016 season - present. As an Instructor, Garrett is currently the Assistant Band Director at Greenville Senior High school and teaches at The Hughes Academy. He taught the front ensemble at at NG | INDOOR last season and also has worked at Blacksburg High School, Irmo Middle School, Belton Honea-Path High School and has had a small studio of drum set students. When he is not teaching, Garrett regularly records and performs with several local groups in the Greenville/Up-State area.
Assistant Director of Ensemble - Sam Studley
Sam Studley is a Music Educator and Percussionist based in the upstate of South Carolina. Currently, Sam is a HS Band and Orchestra Director in Greenville County. Before becoming a full-time director, he served as percussion coordinator and arranger for numerous groups in SC. Sam spent four seasons serving as a Bass technician with PIW group Palmetto Percussion, and was Co-Director of PIA group Catalyst Percussion in 2011-2012. He served as the Percussion coordinator for Greer HS from 2009-2015, and also worked with high school's such as Dorman, Mauldin, Blue Ridge, Riverside and Easley.
Sam is a 2011 graduate from North Greenville University and has his B.A. in Music Education. He marched with Palmetto Percussions PBJ Bassline for three seasons in 07, 09, and '10 (PIO Gold Medalists). He is a member of NAfME, PAS and SCMEA.
Battery Caption Head - Zach Ervin
Zach Ervin currently resides in Marietta, SC with his wife, Mandie, & their three children. Zach graduated from Travelers Rest High School in 2006 & then attended North Greenville University from 2006 - 2011 while majoring in Music Education. Zach became involved with DCI in 2004 & later with the Carolina Crown Drum & Bugle Corps in 2009. Zach has studied under & been instructed by multiple world renown percussionists in the past – to include: Jeff Queen, Paul Rennick, Thom Hannum, Lee Beddis, Zach Schlicher, Dr Scott Herring, Dr Brad Meyer, and Dr Christopher Davis. Zach is a current Police Officer in Greenville, SC & has been serving in the USMC Reserve since September of 2009. Zach has taught & consulted multiple high school percussion groups in Greenville area from 2007 to present – to include: TRHS, Blue Ridge HS, Greer HS, Berea HS, & Greenville HS. Zach is currently the battery caption head at Greenville HS (2016 & 2017). Zach continues to write music & consult for various percussion groups & ensembles throughout the upstate of South Carolina.
Front Caption Head- JaRon Brown
JaRon Brown is a composer and front ensemble instructor who recently obtained his bachelor’s degree in Music Composition at The University of South Carolina. He has studied composition under the direction of Dr. John Fitz Rogers and Dr. David K. Garner, as well as percussion with Dr. Scott Herring and Dr. Brett Landry. While at The University of South Carolina he has had the honor and privilege of premiering four of his most recent works Fragmented Shards of Crystallized Water (2015), Neurobaloo (2016), RIPEHEART (2017), and Giant Woman (2017) . He is currently the front ensemble tech for Irmo High School Marching band under the Assistant Director of bands and Director of percussion Robert Giovanelli.
Visual Caption Head - Elizabeth Rideout
Lizzy Rideout is excited to serve as North Greenville Indoor's Visual Caption Head for the 2018 season. Lizzy is a native of Mount Pleasant, SC. She is a graduate of The University of South Carolina (2016) with a bachelor’s degree in Marine Science and is currently completing her master’s degree in education at USC. She has taught various guards in South Carolina, including James Island HS, Dreher HS, and Mid-Carolina HS for their fall guards and winter guard programs. She is currently the color guard director, visual director, and assistant director at Airport HS. She has performed with Wando High School from 2008 to 2011 winning 4 straight gold medals as well as performing at BOA Grand Nationals. While at USC she was a member of the Carolina Band color guard in 2012. Lizzy currently resides in Columbia, SC as she finishes her degree and hopes to begin a career teaching HS Science.
