Crossing Cultures: East Meets West
The last Spring-2012 program sponsored by the Faith, Race, & Culture Committee will be an Asian-themed event April 2 at 5:30 p.m. in Hayes Ministry Center, called “Crossing Cultures: East Meets West.” Directed by Dr. Hiewon Shin, this event will feature Asian foods and selected scenes from the film The Joy Luck Club, from the best seller by Amy Tan, as well as some excerpted clips from an interview with Ms. Tan. Dr. Shin will use these clips to illustrate issues such as intergenerational conflicts between immigrant parents and their American-born children, interracial dating and marriage, cultural misunderstandings and miscues, identity issues and changing cultural values (for children of immigrants), and problems of perpetuating Asian-American stereotypes. The audience will be invited to participate freely in Question & Answer periods for each issue.
