Elementary Education Department
With the unique blend of field experiences plus classroom instruction, the teacher candidates for Elementary Education at North Greenville University learn to become Effective Practitioners, Caring Leaders, and Lifelong Learners as defined in our conceptual framework.
Elementary education majors start in their first semester with Introduction to Education, where they have 20 hours of field experience in the schools, then continue with other education courses during the sophomore year.
Beginning in their junior year they work in cohort groups for their Field Experience where they are in the schools for three hours a day one day a week. Here they begin teaching lessons and receiving feedback from trained mentors on their lessons. In the first semester of their senior year they expand on this base and spend all day in the schools for two days.
In the second semester of their senior year they complete the Student Teaching Experience where they are in the schools for twelve weeks under the supervision of an experienced cooperating teacher.
After passing Praxis II they become eligible for certification for grades 2-5.
