Dr. Jerry Boone begins his third year as an Associate Professor in Sport Management at North Greenville University. He earned the Ph.D. degree in Kinesiology at Louisiana State University in May of 1995, and his dissertation was entitled Achievement Goals and Motivational Climates for Physical Education. His research interests include the goal perspectives of individuals as they relate to achievement and how the learning climate in which an individual is involved affects success
Dr. Boone has published articles in various publications during his professional career, with his most recent scholarly article titled The Impact of Student Goal Orientation in Physical Education Classes published in Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport. He has also had a paper, Motivational Climate and Beliefs About Success: A Goal Perspective Approach, presented at the annual meeting of the Southern District of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.
He earned his Masterís degree in Physical Education at Central (OK) State University, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education from the University of Southeastern Louisiana, and an Associateís degree from Oklahoma City Southwestern College.
Dr. Boone has 42 years of experience in college coaching and athletic administration at the NJCAA, NAIA, and NCCAA level. At Oklahoma City Southwestern, he served in positions as athletic director, dean of students, and head baseball and basketball coach. Three of his former baseball players played in the major leagues and one of the basketball players played in the Atlanta Olympics on the Puerto Rican team. He served three years as basketball coach and assistant professor at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, TX. From there, he moved to Jimmy Swaggart Bible College, where he served as athletic director, chair of physical education, and basketball coach. While at JSBC, Dr. Boone implemented the intercollegiate athletic program and helped design and oversaw the construction of the eleven million dollar Ketcham Health and Fitness Center.
After spending one year at Lee University as the intramural director and assistant basketball coach, he then taught and coached basketball at Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, GA for eleven years. While at Emmanuel, Dr. Boone wrote and implemented a kinesiology program that included the tracks of exercise science and sport management. His most recent position has been at Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, Texas, where he served as athletic director and head basketball coach. In addition to those responsibilities, he implemented and served as coordinator of the sport management program.
Dr. Boone was selected Coach of the Year by his peers on eight different occasions and was designated as Faculty Member of the Year at Oklahoma City Southwestern College. He has served in positions of leadership at the conference, regional, and national levels as conference president, regional chair, and national sports chair. Twice he received the Meritorious Service Award from the National Christian College Athletic Association. In 2008, Dr. Boone was inducted into the Southwestern Christian University Hall of Fame.
