MAT Admission Requirements
The applicant must meet the following requirements to be eligible for enrollment in the program:
a. Apply online or submit a paper application with the non-refundable application fee. Please refer to the Graduate Application Instruction Page for general admission requirements and a list of documents that must be submitted (reference forms, essay, and official transcript/s).
b. Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution in one of the following areas:
c. Have a minimum undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.75. Students lacking the basic GPA requirement may be required to take the GRE exam.
d. All candidates must meet the South Carolina Department of Education requirements for undergraduate hours within their area of specialization (http://ed.sc.gov/agency/act/se/ec/cert/certpdf/teachercertificationmanual.pdf). Students must undergo a transcript analysis using the South Carolina required semester hours. The transcript analysis will be conducted by the Dean of the Graduate School of Education and a committee of full time education graduate faculty. Students may be required to submit course descriptions and syllabi of the courses taken. Upon the transcript review, students who are lacking required courses will be admitted on a probationary status and will need to take the required courses within the first year from the date of their probationary acceptance. These courses can be taken at any accredited university upon approval from the Dean of the Graduate School of Education.
Candidates need to take the following portions of the PRAXIS II:
Social Studies Content Knowledge and Interpretation (0086)
Mathematics Content Knowledge (0061) and Mathematics: Proofs, Models, and Problems (0063).
English Language, Literature, and Composition (0044).
Biology and General Science (0030).
f. Probationary status may be considered by the Dean of the Graduate School of Education if all admission requirements are not met.
