Major Description

As a mathematics and engineering major at NGU, you will spend much of your time studying applied mathematics in physics, chemistry, and computer science; writing papers that explore mathematical concepts; using numbers to explore patterns and processes; studying subjects that grow increasingly abstract and complicated; and taking lecture courses, as well as computer labs.

You will learn about reasoning, proof, and research methods; computer programming; statistical methods; applied mathematics; and numerical analysis, as well as how to apply this knowledge in your own work.

By your senior year, you will have gained abilities to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering; to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data; to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints, such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability; to function in multidisciplinary teams; to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems; to understand your professional and ethical responsibility as an engineer; to communicate effectively; and to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

The mathematics and engineering degree is a dual degree created in association with Clemson University. After completing the required courses at NGU for the mathematics degree, you will proceed to Clemson University to finish your degree in engineering. Once you have completed the engineering degree at Clemson, you will also be granted your bachelor's in mathematics from NGU. Thus, you can earn two degrees in the time that it takes many students to earn one degree. 

Curriculum

The curriculum within the Mathematics Department at NGU begins with foundational courses in calculus and mathematical logic and then progresses to allow you to apply mathematical tools and skills in real-world situations.

As you continue through the program, you will explore the mathematical worlds of physics, computer programming, and computational math. You will finish your degree with a research paper in an area of mathematics that you choose.

Faculty Strengths

The Mathematics Department faculty members are specialized in their field by way of a doctoral degree, master's degree, or specialized certification. Each faculty member also participates in undergraduate research that ranges from computer programming to mathematical coding theory; engages students in the classroom through dynamic lectures; and encourages students to develop their mathematical skills and use their abilities to honor God.

Hands-On Experience 

Calculus-Based Physics

The physics lab at NGU will allow you to see mathematical principles of our physical world in action. You will have a hands-on learning experience that will connect mathematics with reality.

Computer Labs

NGU's computer labs will be used throughout your mathematical development, as you learn programming and how to apply those skills to mathematical problems in Numerical Analysis.

Mathematical Research

Your degree will culminate with a research project in an area of mathematics that you choose. Recent projects have looked at the mathematics of warfare, voting systems, and the ratings systems of college football.
