Your Story of Hope and Healing
Hello there, North Greenville! Welcome to our new and improved Mountain Laurel Website. The Mountain Laurel is our university’s official literary magazine, where you have the opportunity to be published. If you haven’t yet, check out our Mission page to see what we’re all about.
However, I wanted to share some of my personal thoughts on our mission. G.K. Chesterton once wrote, “Art is the signature of man.” The context of this quote explains that the ability to create is what sets man apart from the animals. Our God-given creativity is such an amazing aspect of our humanity, and TML seeks to display that aspect to the fullest.
In our creativity, though, we seek to display reality. Let’s face it: life on earth is hard! Tragedy, grief, pain, loss, tears. All are part of our existence here right now. Often we use our art and writing as an outlet, a comfort, a visual display of those sorrow-laden emotions, and that’s definitely okay—a God-gift for us in tough times. He heals us through the gift of art.
But, as Christians, the here-and-now isn’t all we possess. We have heaven to look forward to in our future! That, friends, should give us such hope. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:19, “If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.” The truth is we have great hope in the next life, and that’s what we as the ML are about as well.
We are a ministry both of hope and of healing. Bring us your cries for help, your shouts of joy, your life-songs. Share with The Mountain Laurel your story.
Love and blessings—and hope,
