#weareNGU Brings NGU Family Together on Social Media

#weareNGU.

It started with a simple idea. Admissions staff members Erin Wall (’00) and Jenny Farnham Williams (’11) wanted to improve and increase North Greenville University's reach, so they came up with a hashtag that the university could promote across various social media sites.

“For us, [the hashtag] was a way to start getting word out about North Greenville,” says Wall. “I wanted it to be very visible of what we're doing here. Social media is a great tool to do that.”

Their plan seems to have worked.

NGU officially introduced the new hashtag in Fall 2013, and fans of the university — especially current students — picked up on it right away. To date, they've used #weareNGU more than 8,000 times on Instagram alone. And in the meantime, NGU's social media followers have more than doubled.

But the goal was not just to build a social following with #weareNGU, says Wall. Her team also hoped to build a real sense of family with the initiative.

“A lot of ideals go into that statement: we are NGU. Even though we are a big community, we are still a family, and we're still connected in a very central way: Christ,” says Wall. “For us, that encompassed everything that we felt like NGU was.”

Today, the NGU family continues to use the #weareNGU hashtag nearly every day to share their experiences on campus together. We asked on social media what the hashtag means to them, and here’s what they had to say:

"We're all in this together." - @im_morgan_ashley

"One big happy family." - @kacijulia35

"Being there for each other." - @graceliz96

"We all will rise in Christ together, in God's vision for us." – @jonathannhannah
