POSITION: Assistant/Associate Professor of History

 

DEPARTMENT: History

 
 
Position Summary: The History Department at North Greenville University invites applicants for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor of History beginning January 2021. Advanced ABD applicants may be considered,and the field is open, but ideally the successful applicant will hold a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree, and their field will be either European, non-western, or global.Rank will be commensurate with academic experience. We particularly invite candidates who will enhance the racial, ethnic, gender, or cultural diversity of our university.
 
North Greenville University is a teaching university of the South Carolina Baptist Convention and is a tobacco and alcohol-free campus. All NGU professors are expected to be orthodox Christians who have a strong personal faith, are role models in their piety and ethics, are regularly reflecting upon how their faith influences their discipline and are willing and able to mentor students in their own relationship with Jesus Christ. Faculty are expected to teach in accordance with, and not contrary to the university’s “Statement on Human Flourishing.”
 
 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 
  • Teach in-person 4/4 load(opportunities to teach summer, online, or other courses may become available)
  • Maintain office hours
  • Advise students
  • Serve on faculty committees
  • Participate in some campus events (e.g., convocation, graduation)
  • Model genuine Christian faith in and beyond classroom
  • Intentionally and explicitly integrate the Christian faith with your teaching and scholarship
 
 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 
  • Ph.D. (or very close ABD) in History
  • University teaching experience
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Strong, personal Christian faith; hold to orthodox Christian doctrines
  • Willingness to collaborate with colleagues in a close-knit community
 
 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 
  • Visual Abilities: Read reports, create presentations,and use a computer system.
  • Hearing: Hear well enough to communicate with co-workers, vendors, and students.
  • Dexterity, Grasping, Feeling, Write, type,and use the telephone, copier, and computer systems.
  • Mobility: Open files and operate office machines; move between departments and attend meetings across campus.
  • Talking: Frequently convey detailed or important instructions and ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Lifting, Pulling, Pushing: Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Cognitive/Emotional: Ability to critically think and concentrate. Must be able to respond quickly to changes in conditions –75‐100% of the time.
 
 

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

 
History faculty report up to the History Chair, the Associate Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences, and the Provost.
 

 

WORK SCHEDULE

 
Depends on semester. Full-time teaching, office hours, committees, and other university service.
