NGU Announces New College of Business & Entrepreneurship, Dean
(November 7, 2018) North Greenville University (NGU) announced Wednesday that it will consolidate its business undergraduate and graduate academic programs under a new College of Business & Entrepreneurship. Also announced, Dr. John B. Duncan, currently the associate dean of the College of Business and professor of accounting at Anderson University, has been named founding dean. The new College will launch effective January 1, 2019.
“North Greenville University is making a major move to enhance its academic quality as we consolidate our business programs at the graduate and undergraduate level under the visionary leadership of Dean Duncan. He is a nationally recognized thought-leader in the integration of faith and business and brings a marvelous, proven track record as a dean,” said NGU President Dr. Gene C. Fant, Jr. “We are grateful that he has accepted our invitation to launch this new initiative that will serve the business community in the Upstate and the nation for the next generation.”
Academic majors to be offered in this new College include accounting, business administration, international business, and marketing. The College will also house the Graduate School of Business, which will offer the Master of Business Administration at NGU’s Tim Brashier Campus in Greer, SC.
Before joining the Anderson University faculty in 2016, Duncan served as dean of the School of Business for 13 years at Charleston Southern University. Prior to that appointment, he served as assistant professor of accounting at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, where he held the John Luffey Endowed Professorship in accounting. Before this, he served as dean of the School of Business and director of the Church Finance Institute at William Carey University. Duncan also served as assistant professor and chair of the Department of Accounting at Mississippi College.
“It is a privilege and a true blessing to have been selected to serve as the founding dean of the College of Business and Entrepreneurship at North Greenville University. I’m excited about working with Dr. Fant and the accomplished leadership team that is being assembled to serve the students, faculty, staff, and other constituents of NGU,” said Duncan. “I believe that NGU is a place where God is at work and I look forward to joining in that work to advance the Kingdom and bring glory to God through this Christ-centered university.”
Duncan holds a B.B.A. in Accounting and an M.B.A. from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and he received a Ph.D. in Accountancy from the University of Mississippi. He is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in South Carolina and a Certified Kingdom Advisor®.
“I couldn’t be more excited that John Duncan is joining the North Greenville family. He is a veteran academic leader who is deeply committed to Christ-centered education,” said NGU Provost and Dean of the University Faculty Dr. Nathan A. Finn. “He has strong connections with business leaders in the Upstate and beyond, business educators throughout the country, and key figures in the field of marketplace ministry. He is exactly the right person to lead our College of Business & Entrepreneurship as we seek to educate transformational business leaders for church and society.”
Duncan’s research has been presented at numerous academic conferences and has been published in several leading accounting and business journals. He received the Outstanding Intellectual Contributions Award in 2003 for the College of Business Administration at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
Several national leaders have offered endorsements on Duncan’s behalf.
S.C. Senator Tim Scott says, “John Duncan has proven himself to be an effective and transformational leader at the academic institutions that he has served and in the communities where he has lived. His wealth of experience as a university administrator and his biblical worldview uniquely qualify him for this role as a founding dean. John will help accelerate the wonderful progress that has been ignited by the new leadership team at North Greenville University.”
Bob Shank, founder/chief executive officer of The Master's Program, which provides strategic life mentoring for Christian marketplace and ministry leaders, and co-founder of The Barnabas Group says, “I've known John Duncan for over a decade, and he is a strategic leader whose capacity to influence the marketplace and ministry leaders of this generation is not theoretical, but proven. His contribution to the senior team at North Greenville University will be significant to both the business school and the greater university community.”
“I have had the privilege of working with John Duncan in many ways over the last several years. What a terrific addition he’s going to make to North Greenville University! His colleagues across the country hold him in the highest esteem,” said Ron Blue, founding director of Kingdom Advisors and founder of Ronald Blue & Company, the largest Christian financial planning firm in the country.
Duncan recently served four years on the Board of Directors of the Christian Business Faculty Association (CBFA) and he served as board chair of the CBFA during 2016-17. He is a member of several professional organizations including Kingdom Advisors, the South Carolina Association of CPAs, the Institute of Management Accountants, and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. He has been involved with several marketplace ministries including the Barnabas Group of Charlotte, LifeWorks of Charleston, the Fellowship of Companies for Christ International, and the South Carolina Christian Chamber of Commerce.
Duncan is married to the former Susan Ganann of Carthage, MS. They have two adult sons, Daniel and Drew.
