NGU and GSHRM Host Expungement Law Mastertalk

Tigerville, SC – (February 11, 2019) North Greenville University’s Office of Adult and Graduate Admissions and Greenville Society for Human Resource Management (GSHRM) are pleased to co-sponsor a MasterTalk seminar focusing on background checks and the new expungement legislation recently passed in South Carolina.
The seminar will be held on Wednesday, March 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Tim Brashier Campus in Greer located at 405 Lancaster Avenue. The cost to attend the event is $20, and lunch will be served.
The event features keynote speaker James Silvers of Ogletree Deakins Law Firm, followed by a panel discussion on implications to the workforce led by Greenville Chamber Senior Vice President of Economic Competitiveness Hank Hyatt and Jeremy Windle, projects and compliance administrator for SC Department of Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services.
With the recent passage of the South Carolina Expungement Law and the workforce shortage, knowing how to ethically and legally consider applicants with a criminal history is a must for employers. This seminar will provide information on legal compliance with the applicable laws governing background checks and information on the effects of the new South Carolina law.
Silvers assists employers with human resources and employment-related matters, including matters related to employee onboarding and background checks, termination, discrimination, and employment contracts. As a member of the firm’s Background Checks Practice Group, Silvers regularly counsels clients on practical, lawful ways to comply with the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), Title VII, and state mini-FCRAs. Silvers also regularly advises employers on Reduction in Force (RIF) matters (including ADEA, OWBPA, and WARN issues) and e-signature issues.
After graduation from law school, Silvers served as a law clerk to Chief Justice Jean H. Toal of the South Carolina Supreme Court.
